"Spikes" are bursts of up to 3000 volts caused by electrical load switching and the on/off action of equipment.

They are common during power cuts when the power is restored, they can be very brief but cause lasting damage to sensitive equipment.

"Noise" is an electrical signal that can corrupt your data. It enters power lines from nearby electrical equipment, such as vending machines and flourescent lighting fixtures.
